Individuals Required to File Tax Returns

If you receive any other type of income aside from salary, wages, interest or dividends, you must file an IR3 return.

Other types of income include:

• Self employment
• Withholding Payments
• Income received by IR56 taxpayers, such as private domestic workers
• Income derived overseas
• Over $200 in interest or dividends derived overseas that has tax deducted.
• Overseas interest or dividends that has no tax deducted.
Rental income
• Estate, Trust or partnership income
• Royalties
• Cash jobs or payments ‘under the table’
• Income from illegal enterprises
• Losses to claim or carry forward
• Income without PAYE deducted, such as shareholder-employee salary or a claim received under a taxable loss of earnings policy.

You will also need to file an IR3 if you:

• Left or arrived in New Zealand part-way through the year.
• Are filing a return for a deceased person to the date of death
• Were declared bankrupt part-way through the year
• Changed your balance date part-way through the year.

Income Tax Return Filing

The responsibility for accurate records and returns can be an onerous burden in which seemingly minor errors might result in problems and expenses out of all proportion.

The IRD’s modern computer and telephone systems can leave taxpayers frustrated trying to check whether rebates have been allowed correctly, or in recovering penalties caused through late payment of taxes or computer errors.

With us you may rest in confidence that your return is accurately prepared and will pass IRD examination. Your IRD tax assessments will be checked and discrepancies followed up to ensure tax is levied correctly.

Even though many personal taxpayers no longer are required to file a tax return, taxpayers with irregular or part year income often are entitled to refunds.
